Hills leveled as work continues on Mariposa Port of Entry

Rio Rico High wins 4A-II Gila Regionals

The Hawks are Gila 4A II wrestling champions and will take nine wrestlers to the state competition after Saturday’s competition at Sahuarita High School. Sahuarita finished second, edging Catalina 132-130 for the honor and will take seven wrestlers to state competition. Rio Rico’s undefeated heavyweight, Ricky Valdez, and 132-pounder Dakota Beach both pinned their opponents during Saturday’s match. “One of their goals early in the year was the region championship,” Rio Rico coach Brad Beach said. “If there’s any group of kids who deserve this championship, it’s this team right here.”

Any stimulus funding Santa Cruz County may garner from the feds should not pit the residents of Chula Vista against those that live in north Rio Rico and Morning Star Ranch. This either-or argument that surfaced recently will serve to spark needless friction in our community.

A sign on the wall in the Patagonia Union High School gymnasium said “Lobos outsnake the Vipers.” The Lady Lobos certainly pulled San Miguel’s fangs Jan. 27, beating them 41-33. The Lady Lobos recently won the Southeastern 1A Regional championship, a first for Patagonia girls’ basketball, and came out a little overconfident due to that, letting the Lady Vipers strike first, coach Ralph Padilla said.

SEABHS board boots Varona with 5-2 vote: Cites publicity

Defanging a snake can get you bitten, but it won’t get you into a state basketball season if you do it too late in the season. That’s what happened to the Lobos Wednesday at Patagonia Union High School. They weren’t bitten, and the Lobos did crush the San Miguel Vipers 53-31 to earn a 3-10 season record. It was a case of too little and too late for the Lobos to make state 1A basketball tourney.
