It's time to saddle up for the 92nd Annual Santa Cruz County Horse Races that are scheduled this weekend, April 28-29, and the following weekend May 5-6 at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are at 3142 South Highway 83 (1/4 mile south of intersection State Route 82 and 83 in Sonoita). Admission is $3 for adults, children 12 and younger get in free.

Charlie Hadden, president of the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds and Rodeo Association (SCCFRA), said there will be simulcast wagering from Turf Paradise all dour days with the Kentucky Derby featured on May 5. Traditional Mint Juleps will be available, as well as great food and other fare that will add to the fast fun.
SCCFRA co-chairman Scott McDaniel said that this will be the 41st running for quarter horses in the Santa Cruz County Derby, and that they have more than $30,000 in purse money for that particular race. More than $88,000 in purse money will be paid out with a betting handle of more than $220,000 in total.
The Sonoita Horse Races came together during the early part of the 20th century as an event for locals who were looking for something to do. With legends such as Lightning Bar, Mars, and Blackman, the Santa Cruz County Horse Races have attracted fans from around the world.
Nearly 100 volunteers helped with vending, bartending and maintenance activities last year at the racetrack.
