Nuts, olive oil, white meat, home-made sauce good for your heart ... Controversy continues about the optimal diet to lower the risk for cardiovascular disease. Now, researchers have analyzed data from 372 of 772 participants in a dietary trial in Spain who were randomized to consume either a low-fat diet, or a traditional Mediterranean diet augmented with either virgin olive oil or additional nuts. The traditional Mediterranean diet included use of olive oil for cooking and dressing; consumption of vegetables, nuts, and fish; substitution of white meat for red meat; preparation of homemade sauces using tomato, garlic, onion, and aromatic herbs; and optional moderate consumption of red wine. Participants were 55 to 80 years old and had diabetes or three or more other cardiovascular risk factors. Subjects in the current report were randomly selected for a sub-study on the effect of the intervention on oxidized LDL and on the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px).
The average age of the patients was 68, and a slight majority was female. After three months of the intervention, oxidized LDL levels decreased significantly in the traditional Mediterranean diet groups.

Nogales parking alert ... Due to improper parking of vehicles by fans attending last week's football game against Sahuarita, the Nogales Police will monitor the parking situation at the Nogales vs. Pueblo game, scheduled for tonight, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. Parking is limited on the west side of Apache Boulevard. Fans are reminded they can park in the student parking lot, located on the southwest side of the campus. For the next three football games, in order to better serve NHS football fans, the high school will open the parking lot located behind the giant scoreboard at Apache Stadium. Entrance to this parking lot is on the east side of Apache Boulevard. The parking lot entrance will be marked, making it easy for fans to find. NHS administration and Nogales Police Department encourage fans to use this lot instead of parking on the street. A ticket booth will be located nearby, making it easier and closer to enter Apache Stadium. For more information, call George Alarcon at (520) 980-0392.
