Cross Country ... NHS at Rincon/Desert View, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10
Swimming ... Rio Rico High lost to the Palo Verde Titans Sept. 4 - Boys 48-30 and Girls 70-2. First place finishers for Rio Rico were Alex Gerber in the 50-yard freestyle (6:03:00) and Jacob Lowe in the 100-yard freestyle (1:05:00). "The team held their own but lost only due to team size," coach Ross Staadecker said.
Volleyball ... PUHS, Sept. 4, Lady Lobos junior varsity over Tombstone. 15-25, 25-15, 16-14; and Tombstone varsity over Patagonia, 25-14, 25-20, 25-15. "Our girls showed well against this 2-A team. They have a much larger school, and a larger pool of quality players. Our JV did well, and squeaked a win in the tiebreaker. Our varsity girls had a harder time, but scored very well in my opinion. We had some good stats," Lady Lobos coach Brad Haber said. Kelsey Ronquillo led with three kills; Jolene Quiroga had two; and Iris Cooper had one. "Our passing game is improving; our service needs more work, and the rest will fall into place," Haber said.

Golf
Hole in one ... Jane Yi shot a hole-in-one Sept. 5 at Rio Rico Resort & Country Club. Yi accomplished the feat on the third hole, 97 yards, with a two wood. Jung Soon Lee, Angee Cho and Jong Sook Kim witnessed the feat.
Board of Realtors ... The 12th Annual Santa Cruz County Board of Realtors Golf Tournament is planned for Oct. 4 at Kino Springs Country Club. Registration opens at 7 a.m. and the tourney begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Registration is $85 per person. Format is two person teams, 6-6-6 format (scramble-alternate-best ball) with A, B and C flights. Green fees, cart and goodie bag are included. Horne Ford is the hole-in-one sponsor, with a 2008 vehicle. Prizes go to the top two places. Registration is due by Sept. 29. Limit 144 golfers. Tubac Fire District ... The 4th Annual Tubac Fire District and Local No. 4125 Golf Tournament is planned for Oct. 11 at Tubac Golf Resort. Registration is $75 per player, which includes golf and Carne Asada at Wisdom's Caf/ following the game. Tee box signs are going for $100 (entry fee) and hole sponsorships are $75 for those not playing. Proceeds go to scholarships for Rio Rico High School graduating seniors and to educational and training classes the Explorer program, and a fund for Tubac Fire District employees in times of emergency. The tourney begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. Registration is open at 8 a.m. Format is four-man scramble, with no handicaps. Trophies will go to the top three teams. Longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contests are planned.

Running
United Way 5K run/walk planned ... United Way of Santa Cruz County is planning their City of Nogales 2nd Annual Live United Dash 5K run/walk for Nov. 1. The event will benefit United Way's Safe and Ready to Learn Children and Strengthening Families fund by serving over 20 local agencies. Last year, United Way invested more than $75,000 in programs and services that provided safe and structured activities for children; basic family needs; and health care, transportation and nutrition programs for seniors. This event is promoting healthy lifestyles and contributions to their community by inviting families, civic organizations and all businesses who want to participate. United Way of Santa Cruz County is requesting that local organizations further demonstrate their community support through sponsorship of this worthy event.
The race/walk is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fleischer Park in Nogales.

Fans voting online this week will help select the Major League baseball player whose on-field performance and contributions to his community inspire others to higher levels of achievement. Fan voting for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year award will be conducted on www.mlbplayers.com, the official website of Major League baseball players through Sunday, Sept. 14. Fans should visit ww.mlbplayers.com to select their favorites among nominees. Six finalists chosen by fans (one for each division) will appear on the Players Choice Awards ballot when all Major Leaguers vote Sept. 17 to select the winner.
