The Nogales High Lady Apaches were hitting well Thursday when they defeated Pueblo, 7-4. While on-base percentage was low (13 of 32), quite a few Nogales batters flied out or were thrown out. The same was true for Pueblo. And, while Damonik “D.K.” Morales had only four strikeouts, 11 Pueblo batters were thrown out at first base.

Hot bats
Nogales bats were hot, with the Lady Apaches scoring six runs to Pueblo’s one in the first three innings. Pueblo scored one in the fourth, and Nogales answered with one more in the fifth. Pueblo then scored twice in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough.
“We tried to over-hit a little because she (Jessica Valenzuela) was a slower pitcher than we expected. He (Pueblo coach Terry Shinn) had another pitcher who is no longer on his team that was really good, and that’s what we were expecting to see. We had to adjust a little and we did that pretty well, early on,” Dober said.
Nogales’ defense was adequate, but not as good as it could have been, Dober said. “Defensively speaking, we had four errors. Against teams that have a little better pitching “ a little better hitting “ those four errors can’t happen. We’ve got to clean that up so we can keep out of close games.”
Still, Dober was happy with the win. “I’m always pleased when we have a win.”
Nogales’ No. 1 pitcher, Morales, was throwing well, Dober said. “Defensively, Pryscilla (Heredia, shortstop) had a good game.”
Wins are coming more frequently for the Lady Apaches this season. They’re 12-9 for the season. That’s better than .500.
“Actually, more wins than we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Dober said.
The Lady Apaches travel to Marana tonight at 4 p.m. They’re home at Fleischer Park Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Sabino.
