“Daily, headlines and news reports tell us of the worldwide economic crisis,” said Executive Director Robert Phillips. “Here in Santa Cruz County and Nogales, Sonora it is the non-profit organizations that are picking up the pieces.”
Communities on both sides of the border have “repeatedly shown a willingness to come together to solve problems, and will do so again,” he said.
Helping hand
Proceeds from the Folklorico will enable the foundation to continue bringing people together including donors, non-profit organizations, private and corporate foundations, businesses, and government to form partnerships and find solutions for the immediate crisis and provide long-term stability.
SCCF has received a two-year Ford Foundation grant to help agencies address the epidemic of diabetes in the border region.
Funds raised will help the foundation provide technical assistance to local non-profits. More than 20 agencies have asked for help in strategic planning, creating a Web site and other areas of needed assistance. SCCF has created an executive roundtable of executive directors from non-profits.
The foundation makes grants to non-profits affected by the economic crisis. SCCF has granted more than $84,000 this year to non-profits on both sides of the border.
Folklorico will be from 4:30-9 p.m., featuring food catered by La Roca, music by Caray, foklorico dancing by Lourdes Catholic High School and a live auction. It is also an opportunity to honor volunteers and organizations that help residents in their times of need.
This year, the donation is $99 per person and can be obtained by calling (520) 761-4531. They are also available at La Vina (Tubac), Santa Cruz Chili Company (Tumacacori), Alexander’s (Nogales) and Bracker’s Department Store (Nogales).
