Manny,
Bless you! In case you did sneeze!
I find your opinion on the closing of the schools for one week to be completely flawed. Yes more people die of the so-called "regular" flu than from this one. But the fact remains that there have been deaths from this one.
People are not spreading either fear or the flu, if this causes people to wash their hands more and to use hand sanitizer are we not all better off for this? If you applied common sense to this you have to agree that closing the schools now is indeed the prudent thing to do. What is the problem with closing? Yes, parents now have to take care of their kids for one extra week out of the year. Who is really impacted? Businesses, not hardly. Parents might be inconvenienced.
What really caused me to react to this is your statement and I quote from the article.
"To make matters worse, Nogales Unified School District No.1 closed all 10 schools for a week because one kid at Bracker Elementary School got sick (and is all better now)."
If anything NUSD Superintendent Shawn McCollough and his staff should be congratulated for what they have done. This was probably the hardest decision that they have ever had to make! NUSD has the days to play with, so why not use them? This is probably the best time of year to close schools, all state mandated testing is over with, Teachers are still teaching, but can make the adjustments in their lesson plans.
How is this making things worse? Would it not be worse if more students got sick? An ounce of prevention is indeed worth a pound of cure.
And oh yes, I just read that another case has been confirmed in our schools.
When would you advocate closing the schools? After the 10th? 15th? When? No, this is not fear, it is common sense.
By the way, there is one point you make that I agree with you.
If the Mayor did indeed unilaterally decide to cancel the Cinco de Mayo events without any input from staff or council, that in my opinion, is an impeachable offense, AKA Recall, since it did cause people to lose thousands of dollars.

The point you missed is that IF the Mayor made a unilateral decision without any input from staff or council, then yes he, the Mayor, really messed up!
The schools were closed AFTER an emergency meeting with all administrators and central office staff, along with the Governing Board.
What meeting did the Mayor have? Maybe he did call for one, but I have yet to hear of one being held. "

Poor parents, have to put up with their kids for an extra week, ha ha! Im sure the kids are not complaining. We, teachers, student, staff, are tired. It's been a long year, having to deal with the new ELL mandate, budget crisis, etc.
No one has lost out on classes being canceled. "
