Hilltop Gallery hosted its 37th Annual Judged Show, “The Prizes of May,” on Sunday, May 3. Eight new artists joined longtime gallery supporters in an exceptionally professional display.

The dimensional category rewarded three unusual works. First place went to Sherman Rouse for Harley Charley fashioned from recycled steel. Another newcomer, Ulrike Owens, earned second place with her stained glass Navajo Design. Walter Ben Hill won third place with his pipe cleaner construction of an old jalopy called O Brother Brown.
First-place painting
Diane Gonzales, a gallery member and supporter for many years, won first place in the painting and drawing category for Late Night Blooming. Second place went to Virginia Carroll for At the Confectionery, a color pencil drawing. Another newcomer, Lynne Nelson, took third place for her watercolor Late Bloomer.
Two painters were recognized with Honorable Mention. These were Georgia Doubler for Kachina, a tempera ink resist, and M. Gpe. N. Rendon for an acrylic painting, The River.
Bob Prager won a special award that the judge called the OMG. Bob entered an enormous swallowtail butterfly made out of recycled metal. It has an 88” wing span and has been donated to Hilltop for a raffle.
