Former Sanchez aide pleads guilty to theft; faces up to 6 months in prison when sentenced

Published Tuesday, May 19, 2009 9:56 AM MDT

According to The Associated Press, a former executive assistant to U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez, (D-Calif.), has pleaded guilty to stealing from office funds.

Admission

Caroline Valdez, a native of Nogales, Ariz., admitted in federal court Monday that she used Sanchez's House of Representative credit card to buy airline tickets for herself and a family member and have pizza and groceries delivered.

The 27-year-old Arlington resident also admitted that she forged Sanchez's signature to get $6,000 in bonus salary and inflated the cost of taxicab fare she paid to get greater reimbursement.

Valdez said that her theft totaled more than $5,000 during the two years she worked for the Democratic congresswoman.

Consequence?

She faces up to six months in prison when she is sentenced on Sept. 25. Sanchez's office declined to comment.

" Regarding requirements to fill positions, don't make me laugh! Those requirements are thrown away with the "experience" route.

Bottom line is that the jobs in this town still go to friends of friends, and that is why this town is behind Tubac and even Patagonia. They have a plan for development and tourism and recycling, we do not.

Our educational system develops exceptional people, who when they are here they are nothing more than support personnel, but are hired in extremely well positions when they leave.

Hard work and intelligence don't advance you here, connections do.

And the people in charge CANNOT hire anyone they please! They do not own the departments or the cities! WE do, and if someone is unqualified for a position, we all have a right and a duty to make sure that it is known to the public. These people should be ashamed of themselves, not gloating in public office. "

As you scroll down the page to make a posting in the the Box it clearly states WRITE A COMMENT, it also states COMMENT POSTERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OPINIONS THEY EXPRESS (ok not a problem, everyone's got their own opinion, but the next part I find amusing) AND THE ACCURACY OF THE INFO THEY PROVIDE.
Next time make sure that you have accurate info regarding a failed test. Yeah? maybe then it wont be made so clear you are illiterate. Ciao! "

" Why doesn't anyone in Nogales ever get their information straight?

To begin with, Mrs. Valdez has several granddaughters. NONE of them have ever or do work for the Nogales Fire Department. I do not know who the lady hired is, but I am sure that Chief Robles is capable of hiring whomever he wants!!

As for Assistant Principal Position at NHS, this sounds like someone is intimidated.

Did anyone think that there are requirements to fill the position? Maybe Mrs. Valdez's granddaughter who was my teacher at NHS fits the requirements. She didgraduate from the U of A, has a master's and is state certified. Either way, everyone who fits the description should get a chance!!

Instead of listening to rumor's, go ask the individuals involved!! "

Many Nogales resisdents make big stinks about a family that is well known, but they don;t like the negative attention they make when it's one of their own.
We need to focus on what is coming in the future. we are no one to judge. I'm pretty sure that Ms. Valdez has lost more than $5,000... losing your Integrity is priceless! Good luck and drive on! "

" Olga Valdez will also put her two cents in when it comes to hiring the new assistant principal at Nogales High School. She has been working really hard to get yet another one of her grand daughters into that position. Coscorrones go out to those who will listen to her. Exactly what do people owe this family? "

" I would say she was hired by nepotism if I had to wager any money. This is how things work around here. You get jobs and positions here by how you know. And these people are used to it and expect it and think they deserve it.

This is why Nogales is the way it is. It is full of wonderful people but it is run by the same old same old. "

" You can take the girl out of Nogales, but you can't the Nogales out of the girl. It is good to see that Nogales political habits are drawing attention at the national level. So after doing a little bit of time, she can just come back to Nogales, put up some signs, and get elected to the city council or maybe become mayor. I am looking forward to it. "

" Was Caroline hired on ability or hired on Nepotism?

Public Servants going down the drain again

Many positions available in Santa Cruz County when she returns

    Where will she land? "
