The USA is becoming a Third World nation

Published Friday, May 22, 2009 9:34 AM MDT

Frank Arana Jr.

Being of fairly sound physical and mental health, I will try to express my opinion on past and current events that make me wonder where this nation is headed.

The saddest part for me is to see that the nation is inevitably heading into a downward spiral and unfortunately it is kind of late to stop it.

There will be, of course, people that will not agree with my assessment of the present state of affairs and I will probably be criticized and labeled in many ways. However, I will still try and tell it like I see it.

This nation is in the throes of changing into a Third World nation where everything American is disappearing thanks to the unrelenting zeal of our so-called leaders, beginning with President Johnson, that have taken up the “diversity” battle cry as their motto.

How can a nation keep its identity when it allows unchecked immigration to thrive for 30-40 years? At least 100-140 countries have provided instant Americans to our nation and now we see the results where all of them are demanding their rights. Some are demanding that we take the word “God” out of our lives, and we seem to be complying. They have already taken the Pledge of Allegiance out of our schools.

We have given the automobile industry to our former enemy, the steel industry to a Latin nation (Brazil), etc. etc.

We have become a nation of consumers at the mercy of our providers, most of them foreign. American customs, values, rituals are constantly under attack by our instant Americans.

Brands like Chevrolet have been replaced by Toyota and Nissan; Del Monte by Pace Salsa, Caterpillar by Komatsu, etc.

Our jobs have been exported to India, China, Indonesia, Mexico, etc. Our energy depends on foreign oil, and even our source of revenue is in the hands of foreigners, thanks to the idiots that negotiate our trade agreements. Our politicians have mortgaged our children’s future.

So think about it and start telling (as if it will make a difference) your representatives that you have had enough of them leading you and your family down the road to living in a place that will rival the slums in Mumbai.

" I don't get some of the points here... America has assimilated numerous nationalities because after the 2nd/3rd generation, people forget about their ancestors' territories { Poland, Britain, Armenia, Russia, etc }, drop the old country's baggage, marry others locally, and become mainstream Americans. That's how immigration into a diverse society works, the whole Balkanization of a nation doesn't... just look at the Yugoslav civil war if you want to see how multiculturalism really acts.

All and all, the reason why America is failing is the lack of support of basic sciences, core R&D, and keeping the product development cycle in the States, instead of immediately offshoring everything. What this has done is encourage the best and brightest, & I'm including the likes of MIT, Carnegie-Mellon, and Harvard grads, a way of leaving *real* work for banking, law, and health care. Three sectors of the economy with non-tradeable goods and services. "

" The USA is in deep trouble and has been for awhile. The Leaders or so called leaders are bought up by money, much of it foreign money from Europe and Asia so they are nothing more then Lap Dogs of the Globalists from Europe who started this game long ago and when it first started the name of it was Colonization but the new term is Globalization as to throw some of the Americans off the Trail of Reality.
The USA is the World's largest debtor Nation, much of our assets have been bought up by Europeans and some other countries such as Japan Saudi Arabia.
These countries are Creditors and own assets all around the world. What do you call this? Neocolonialism!
The USA has less people working now then a decade ago and the job losses continue. We are 25-30 million jobs short of population and many of the people who are officially working work for Walmarts and other low wage/no benefit slave shops.
Who would have thought Airline Pilots would be working or on duty for 12-15 hour shifts including the wait at the airport and get paid $17,000 a year after being officers in the Military or going through a private flight school and running up huge debts-that example alone should tell everyone that the US is not a first world economy anymore!
    USA Today Story!
The USA's Manufacturing has been gutted and continues to loss jobs, we do not compare to the European Union, Japan or China in Manufactring and the European Union is by far the largest exporter of both Merchandise Goods and also-Services. America is not competing and the stats bear this out go to the WTO website and look over the stats you will find Europe and China are the biggest Merchanise Exporters, Europe is by far the largest service Exporter and this indicates for all the crap about about American being more advanced technology wise it is the Europeans who are Engineering the world.
When it comes to Poverty stats, Quality of life, Wages/benefits,etc,etc the US is behind all of the other Western Countries and continues it's descent into Chaos.
Why is the average US citizen ranked only 48th in life expectency compared to other countries and in some Geographical Regions of the country the life expectency is actually falling! We were ranked 5th in the early 1980's.
Why does America have 8 million people in Corrections including Jail, Prison, Parole,Probation, etc which is over 1/3rd of the world's total and we have 4% of the Population?
Our Infrustructure was rated D-minus by the Society of American Engineers and we need Trillions of dollars to upgrade our Bridges,Roads, Schools, Dams, Water Systems, Sewage Systems, Power Systems, Ports, Airports, etc.
For all the money spent on the Military it is now 1/3rd the size compared to 20 years ago and it is being wore down by 2 lightly armed rebel Groups in Afganistan and Iraq.
The Navy on it's present course will have 150 ships within the decade and that is no military superpower and ths point is you can't have a big military without a prosperous economy so as the economy is imploding so is the Military.
And Good because we don't need to be everyone's hired gun.
The US has been declining for 30 years so the Questions: What will all of you do to save yourself? "

" Wow! I certainly hope that Mr. Arana simply wrote this piece to simply rile people up by providing random xenophobic thoughts. It is incredible that a person can be so incredibly ignorant to actually believe this so I am going to give Mr. Arana the benefit of the doubt. His contention that the Pledge of Allegiance was taken out of schools by immigrants is dead wrong. The case regarding the Pledge of Allegiance in schools had to do with religion and not immigration. Mr. Arana, please look it up.
Mr. Arana, if you immigrate to the US and become a US citizen, you are also entitled to have rights. That is why these instant citizens are demanding them. After all they probably came from mmany places where they did not have many of the freedoms that you and I enjoy such as the ability to write our opinions in the esteemed Nogales International. I am sure that your family immigrated to the US at some point in time as well. After all, Arana is certainly not a native American name. So you must either be a criollo or a mestizo, not a full blooded native American. The Arana name comes from an area of Spain called Aragon, so Mr. Arana with all due respect, if you don't like our diversity, our commitment to free enterprise and global trade, then as many intolerant Americans like yourself would say, "go back to where you came from".

Lastly, since you are a business owner you should be grateful that we are a nation of consumers. How many people purchase goods at your store who are not US citizens? How many of the goods that you sell go back into Mexico? Where are your goods manufactured? I hope that everything you sell is made in the good old U.S. of A otherwise you too are contributing to the problem of outsourcing our jobs to other nations. "

What is American wrote on May 26, 2009 6:47 PM:

" Being an American has more to do with our values and less to do with which language we speak and what color skin we have.

It is thoroughly un-American to torture for example, but that was allowed and even endorsed by some people in the country.

It is thoroughly un-American to trust your government 100%, but a lot of people gave the government a clean go, which resulted in the idiotic Iraq war and the near-collapse of the financial system.

Being American does not mean being of a certain color or speaking English. If it did, someone with the name Frank Arana would have a hard time convincing people he was American,

The argument is old and easily spotted as desperate. "

50 YEARS AGO NOGALES WAS A SLEEPY CLEAN AMERICAN CITY. IT SEEMS LIKE IT IS PART OF MEXICO NOW, AND WE ARE THE INTRUDERS. THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR HAS FORCED THIS COUNTRY TO DEPEND ON JUNK BEING SOLD TO OUR COUNTRY BY OTHERS, IT SEEMS THAT EVERYTHING THAT IS IMPORTED IS EITHER RECALLED BECAUSE OF LEAD IN THE PRODUCTS, POORLY MADE OR DANGEROUSMAY GOD BLESS US ALL "

" "They have already taken the Pledge of Allegiance out of our schools." What???? To which schools are you referring? The Pledge of Allegiance has never been removed from our schools.

I must also assume that Mr. Arana is a Native American of some sort...otherwise his ancestors are among those immigrants who came here uninvited and changed things to suit themselves. If not, isn't most of his complaint a bit hypocritical?

As for our "leaders" sending all our business overseas, I can only assume that he's not talking about our elected officials (who have to account to us in one way or another eventually), but rather our BUSINESS leaders who have raped our economy to squeeze another buck out of our pockets. We keep hearing fear-mongerers in the GOP raving about how Big Government will stifle business, and yet the unrestrained business practices of the past few decades show just what happens if government DOESN'T intervene.

    Can you spell "recession?" "

Carlo wrote on May 23, 2009 8:17 AM:

" You make some valid points in your reflective piece, Mr. Arana. Thanks.

However, allow me a correction: Pace Salsa is a US company. It was founded by a Texan, David Pace, and is now owned by the Campbell Soup Company, which is about "as American as apple pie" as can be.

Which once was a slogan connected to Chevrolet. Less so, likely because so many Chevy models are now built in Canada and Mexico. For example, most Suburbans, Tahoes, Avalanches, Colorados, and Silverados are built in GM's huge Toluca plant. (Same is true with Ford: its fine Fusion is built in Hermosillo.)

On the other hand, virtually all the Nissan, Toyota, and Honda models sold here are built in the US in state-of-the-art factories.

I own a Honda built in Alabama, using 75% US parts; a neighbor owns a Mexico-built Fusion, using only 35% US parts. Which is the "more" American car?

What's at work, here, it seems to me, is good old, competitive capitalism working its way in the Global Market, resulting in the fact is that it has almost become impossible to buy anything "American."

As for a "solution" to our slow and steady decline?

Well, a little less greed might help.

    (Crossing my fingers, here!) "
