A convenient drug bust on I-19

Published Tuesday, June 9, 2009 10:23 AM MDT

My goodness, how convenient. The Border Patrol just happens to intercept contraband during a protest by the residents of Tubac, much to the delight of photographers and reporters.

We are told that the agents will sometimes allow contraband to pass the real border in order that it can be intercepted at the Tubac checkpoint.

You don’t suppose – naaah! They wouldn’t! Would they?

Nicholas J. Bleser

" I truly have no problem with the check point. At times when just traveling up North it does get crowded and take up around 15 mins of my time. I do know its their job to do. I do not know their task, regulations, etc. I do imagine its a hard task because you can be seen as a hero or a trader. I admire their courage for doing such a job. My question is to those that DONT want the checkpoint. You say it brings danger to the neighborhood, but I dont see how. I just question why it is you TRULY want it out of the area ...think about that for a moment hmmmm "

" The checkpoint is an effective law enforcement aid used by multiple state and federal agencies. People, there are so many law enforcement operations ongoing daily south of the checkpoint it would make your head spin. Read this and know that the checkpoint is an INVALUABLE tool for the law enforcement professionals in southern Arizona. If there is any narcotic load purposely "let into" the US and stopped at the check point, it is because it was what was best for that particular case legally. Law enforcement agents here could care less about some type of liberal agenda or for that matter "staging" a seizure. We care about getting the job done, keeping the streets safe and jailing those responsible. For those "idiots" out there who think otherwise, please go back to whatever conspiracy theory handbook you've been reading and let the professionals do the work you can only squawk about. "

    " It is a fact;

    Border Patrol ALWAYS inflates data!

Border Patrol DOES NOT reveal the number of "GET AWAYS" (Car, truck, etc) they have at the Border each day!

Border Patrol IS "Profiling" at their respective check points - constantly violating and ignoring Constitutional Rights!

Border Patrol CAN NOT secure the U.S. Border because they ARE NOT patrolling the Border!

Write your State Reps and Congressional Reps and demand that Border Patrol return to patrolling the International Border! "

" I hope the checkpoint is effective.

However, if it is, why was it that (according to a story in the GV News) the AZ Dept of Environment, the Border Patrol, and volunteers recently cleaned up truckloads of debris left behind by illegals? The clean-up was done north and east of the checkpoint near Madera Canyon. Not so many miles away, as a matter of fact.

    Just asking... "

Whos naive wrote on Jun 12, 2009 5:17 PM:

" I am completely stunned by how naive everyone in this community is when it comes to the Border Patrol. We have been told by members of the BP that they allow shipments of drugs through the border in order for it to be intercepted at the checkpoint so that it is credited to the checkpoint. We have also found out from federal documents that the numbers of apprehensions at the checkpoint are inflated due to the same person being counted multiple times. The Border Patrol has an agenda. Their agenda is to grow as large as possible so that they get more taxpayer money and have more job stability. They do this by justifying their existence. The Border Patrol also steals officers from our local police and sheriff departments by offering higher salaries. Then they place a checkpoint in the middle of a residential community and endanger the lives and homes of those residents. The residents have little or no recourse because the sheriff's department is understaffed. Wake up people. The Border Patrol is one of the largest bureaucracies in the country! In 2008 they spent nearly $200,000 on lobbyists. What did they get for their money? Nearly $500 million for 2,200 new Border Patrol agents in 2009. They have more than tripled in size since 1996. If they had actually done their job and kept illegal immigrants from entering the U.S., I would strongly support them. But they have failed miserably and for years. Since the last amnesty in 1986, it is estimated that 12 to 20 million new illegal immigrants have entered the U.S.. Of those immigrants apprehended between 2007 and 2009, fully 100% were able to enter on a second or third try (Center for Comparative Immigration Studies, UC San Diego). I support "effective" methods for the prevention of illegal immigration. The Border Patrol is not effective. They don't deserve our hard-earned tax dollars. And checkpoints are the least effective method they use. Let's not spend $27 million + of our tax dollars on an ineffective checkpoint that also harms our neighbors. "

" Does this person really believe that he drug bust at the checkpoint was staged? How does he feel about other law enforcement agencies. Does he complain that the local police department conviniently solved another murder or robbery? "

KF wrote on Jun 10, 2009 12:52 AM:

" Let's see...#1 One must live in a self-absorbed oblivious world to believe that this was staged - or imply such. The Border Patrol was simply doing their JOB as they do on a daily basis- u should try to get one of those instead of spending your time on your selfish "protests" & stop being so naive. #2 As a civilian who has worked closely with law enforcement in the past I must say that if or when they "let some dope thru" it's not like they just let it go & end of story NOOOO!!!! They have undercovers & such follow the small load to eventually find & take down the bigger loads & dealers. Sooo please my friend inform yourself better & do some more research before you go on complaining about a "temporary" checkpoint being made "permanent" (btw that's already been there for nearly 10yrs if not more)....what difference will it REALLY make if it permanent??? REEEEAAAALLY???? "

Citizen wrote on Jun 9, 2009 4:52 PM:

" What people don't understand is there is "dope" and other non-legal activity encountered on a daily basis at the checkpoint and everywhere else around here. It was not out of "convenience".....don't work Mr. Bleser, they were not trying to put on a show for you. Open your eyes and see what is happening all around, not just in your neighborhood. The local law enforcement and Border Patrol have been doing a wonderful job at what they do best, protecting us. "

Me wrote on Jun 9, 2009 4:18 PM:

" Coincidence or not, the point is that there was a drug bust that will be kept from the streets and from our youth.

You say remove the fence and checkpoints, I say if you don't like it and are so "liberal" then get your stuff and go live in Mexico!

People, there are laws and regulations for a reason, and we are not in a good time to start changing regulations and standards that have set us apart from other countries. You need to realize that a checkpoint is the least of your worries at this time. Most of Tubac's residnets are not native of Arizona, and have only been faced with "border issues" since their retirement started. We (native of this city and state) have been facing this issue for many years - but we forget!

Look at our crime rate - it is not diminishing! Thsi si the new century, get with the real issues! "

Michael Martinez wrote on Jun 9, 2009 12:52 PM:

" Maybe the seizure made by U.S. Border Patrol Agents at their checkpoint shows that the checkpoint is working and is needed. I don't think that they would allow a load of marijuana go at the border to later intercept it at the checkpoint. The Border Patrol has so many regulations that agents could go to jail if that really happened. Lets think before we make these unreal assumptions. "

    Jon D wrote on Jun 9, 2009 12:09 PM:

" How about the fact that is it more likely that the dope was crossed at a point "other than the port of entry"?

Rumor has it there is going to be a Washington DC visitor to Tubac in the very near future. Now is the time for folks to get out and speak their peace/ "

George Wilgers wrote on Jun 9, 2009 10:58 AM:

" Unfortunately it sounds like sour grapes to me. The bust only shows that the Check Point is needed.

Too many people do not want the Check Point in Tubac, yet many of those same people do not want the Border Fence, or an increased presence on the border.

You have to have one or the other. Make up your mind. "
