Sorry Applet wrote on Jul 6, 2009 11:10 AM:

" I get my "panties in a bunch" because this is pretty important. For the years between 2001 and 2005, anyone that was a little bit different from the traditional right wing base was blasted as unpatriotic, with no basis in truth.

Now we have a non-traditional President, who sparks outrage from the right who blanket their hatred and intolerance by calling themselves unpatriotic, also no basis in truth.

Ever since I have heard of ignorant and bigoted people on the right KILLING people for their lack of knowledge of the truth while forgiving themselves for acting in a "patriotic" sense, I have taken it upon myself to call people out, each and every time.

Examples are the three cases of people who were convinced that Obama was going to take their guns who then went on to kill police officers, children and civilians. Three such murderers that I can remember.

Dr. Tiller in Kansas and the guard at the Holocaust museums are also examples of ignorance and violence that is self-forgiven by a false sense of patriotic duty.

Once people started dying because of pure ignorance and holier than thou mentality, I don't play nice anymore. "

" I can see both points of views: Why celebrate "Mexican style" if it is an "American" Celebration? We are right at the border and obviously and tremendously influenced by our southern neighbor. Then again... What is 'American'? America is a melting pot, even the name came from Europe and the whole continent is called America. I think how we celebrate is a matter of regionalism and culture, which our beloved country is rich in. I was not even born here, but I do celebrate the fact that I am free and lucky to live here.
By the way, Ricky Martin is Puerto Rican, not Mexican. "

Appelet ,yeah pleading the fifth is for people who do not know the right words to say at that given point :P "

" What is wrong with people around here? Even when we are supposed to be happy and celebrating independance, people are arguing over, in my opinion, petty "crap". Let people celebrate however they want!!!! It is a free country.....which is why we are able to celebrate anyways. Get a grip and have fun..... "

" Enjoy your tacos and the Mexican music. I will be living it up in Tubac... now THERE they know how to celebrate, "English" style. LOL!!

Ha... you kill me... the expression of my opinion is no reason for you to get your panties in a bunch.

I plead the 5th, ok? This is getting ridiculous.

    Happy 4th! :) "

Dear Applet wrote on Jun 30, 2009 11:37 AM:

" We ARE having a traditional celebration! That is my point! We are having a parade, festivities, music, and fireworks. You are assuming that the traditional celebration includes things in English and food that is not Mexican.

You are wrong. We are in America and celebrating the 4th of July so by default, we are having an American celebration.

You didn't answer the question about the Irish and French 4th of July Celebrations. Are they any less American because they have Guiness Beer and Cheese Curds? By your standard they are and I would not want to be in your shoes if you go to Boston and tell one of those Irish boys that they are not American.

Americans speak all languages, are all different races and ethnicities, and live sandwiched between two countries. We are going to be varied.

It is very self-righteous and pretentious to dictate to an entire community how they should celebrate the birth of THEIR country.

To me, you don't understand the meaning of the celebration in the first place. It is like good etiquette. Good etiquette is practiced to make others feel comfortable in your home and around you, but some people use it to make themselves feel better than others.

So is the 4th of July celebration. It is meant to celebrate the Independence of our nation and to feel good to be an American, but some people use it to make themselves feel better about themselves.

I like being in the first category, and there are few people more patriotic than me.

See you at the festivities! I will be the one eating tacos and dancing to Ricky Martin, celebrating the fact that I am a free American! "

Applet wrote on Jun 29, 2009 3:15 PM:

" Because of my color? You don't even know what race I am. Ha! You go making snap judgments as to the type of person you THINK I am, calling me self-righteous and more American than though. Too funny...

Just as you are entitled to express your opinion, I am entitled to mine. You're right about one thing: People will celebrate the 4th which ever way they please. I just wish that the celebration in this community, which I grew up in, had more of a traditional American feel to it. There is nothing wrong with tacos and rancheras, IF we were celebrating cinco de mayo or 16 de septiembre. But this America's Independence and I dont think there would be anything wrong with it if Nogales had an old fashioned American celebration for a change. Hey, at least the fireworks display will be choreographed to patriotic music. I think that is as American as it will get. "

Hey Applet wrote on Jun 28, 2009 3:26 PM:

" We as Americans can celebrate the 4th of July any way we want.

Would you say UGH to the 4th of July Celebrations in Boston and in Chicago which tout parade marches in full Irish traditional costume?

How about in rural Tennessee, where they have anvil throwing contests to celebrate the 4th?

And in Nevada, where they have pillow fighting contestst to celebrate?

Or in the north, where many of the celebrations are done in French and with traditional northern or French cuisine?

Of course not. Every year there is a self-righteous "more American than thou" person scoffing at our traditions. And every year you are called out as foolish, and rightfully so.

Well, it does not work, we may be a Mexican American community, but most of us come from parents or grandparents who served in the military, and most of us were born here, making us Americans. The rest have chosed this country as their home, and absolutely love to celebrate the 4th. We are all Americans and you are not more American than we are just because of your color or because of what you eat or because of how many languages you DONT speak. Silly!

If you celebrate with hot dogs and country music, wonderful!

If we celebrate with tacos and rancheras, just as wonderful!

The point is that we are celebrating our country. "

Applet wrote on Jun 27, 2009 12:52 PM:

" And there will be booths selling Mexican food and bands playing Mexican music, right? Yeah, a "real American" celebration it will be!

    ugh! "
