Services today at NHS for 16-year-old Sofia Palma

A memorial Mass is scheduled today at 11 a.m. in the Nogales High School gymnasium for Sofia Palma, 16, “the heart” of the Nogales High School dance squad.

A wake for her was Thursday, from 5-10 p.m.

Palma, who also was a devoted drama student and a junior at NHS, died in Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital at about 8 p.m. Monday from head injuries sustained in what police say was an accidental shooting.

Raul Garcia, 16, is in custody in Santa Cruz County Juvenile Detention Center on a $250,000 bond, charged with second-degree murder. He will be tried as an adult, said Lt. Octavio Gradillas of the Nogales Police Department.

In an interview on Tuesday, dance (pom) coach Rosa Aboud recalled Palma’s “positive outlook and good sense of humor. She was the heart of the team, the one the others would go to talk to when they were struggling or having problems.”

Aboud had been chided by her squad because she had not named the co-captains after tryouts as had been the norm.

“I wanted to see them in action first “ see what they’re made of “ before deciding,” she said.

During interviews for the captain’s position last week, Aboud met with Palma. “She described herself as, ‘motivated, inspired, I always show respect toward others.’ And “ this was so cute “ she said, ‘I critique the others with a positive outlook.’”

“Because I had analyzed her and seen her in action, I told her, ‘You know what? You are everything you are telling me,’” Aboud said. “That’s why she was the heart of the team.”

Palma was to play a key role in Aboud’s plan to shore up a dance squad beleaguered in the past years by a constant churning of coaches, lack of a formal practice area, and other signs of being slighted by school administrators.

“Our plans were made,” Aboud said. “It is really hard on the rest of the team. This is a team that never complains, they work hard and I have never seen this type of commitment. We never expected this.”

Teen finds gun

Investigators said Palma was at a friend’s house at 1066 N. Calle Lomitas in the Nogales West subdivision on Monday night when one of the other teens found a Glock 9mm semiautomatic gun inside a bedroom.

Gradillas said someone took the gun from the drawer, proceeded to remove the magazine, but a round remained in the gun’s chamber.

Garcia first put the gun inside his mouth believing it was unloaded. He then pointed it toward Palma, pulled the trigger and the shot went off.

Gradillas said that the shooting occurred at about 7:30 p.m. at the home.

Most of the teenagers present cleared the house. But Garcia remained, called 911 and attempted to perform CPR before police and paramedics arrived.

“Several other juveniles were present during the incident and are being questioned by authorities,” said Gradillas, adding that the gun was recovered at the scene.

The officers found Palma in the house with a gunshot wound to the head. She died a short time later at the hospital.

According to records in the Santa Cruz County Assessor’s Office, the owner of the home where the shooting occurred is listed as Josefina E. Garcia. But Gradillas said it belongs to Javier Lopez of Nogales, Sonora, whose two sons, Javier, 18, and Jaime, 16, live in the home. The 18-year-old apparently allowed the group of teens into the house, but then left. His younger brother was on the way to the home when the shooting occurred. There were no adults at the scene, Gradiallas said.

Services were scheduled to be held Thursday from 5-10 p.m. at Martinez Funeral Chapels, 891 W. Mariposa Road, in Nogales.

" Sophia was a dear friend of mine... She was vibrant, and full of life, and to everyone that knew her, she was inspiring. It has been almost four months now, and still going to school, or practices expecting to see her and then later realizing she won't be there feels like salt in a fresh cut. Raul should have known better, and he should have never even gone to look through another persons property. Because of his stupidity and ignorance, someone died a death they didn't deserve. For this, i will never forgive him... however, i do thank him for staying there, and not leaving here to die alone... Sophia is now a beautiful yellow butterfly and she is with all of us...

    I love you Sophie!!

" My respect and admiration for Sophia's familiy for the courage they displayed during what was probably the most difficult days of their lives.
How Mrs. Wilczewski's concern for the children of this community compelled her to summon all her courage and speak to them about the dangers of both guns and bad decisions was admirable and frankly, we need to join her in this effort.
Mr. Palma's pleas for understanding and forgivness for a young man that is probably never going to recover from an incident that took away his best friend was equally admirable.
Our young people showed a lot of class and respect during the services, which speaks to the kind of community we have here. Please do all you can, each in their own way, to make sure we do not have this kind of a tragedy again. "

" Message to the youth: Please don't play with guns, and stay away from kids that handle guns, especially the grils that were there that evening during the incident. I hope you start being honest with your parents and yourself, you are both beautiful girls.
Please, kids... stay away from guns and never EVER point a gun at anyone!!! This tragedy has devastated so many of us....... "

" This is heartbreaking and yes, both families have been affected, BUT I think the person that placed the gun the property should also be held responsible, AND... Raul should have NOT pointed that gun at anyone! NO ONE SHOULD PLAY WITH GUNS, AND POINT A GUN AT ANYONE!!!! "

" While it is terrible that this occurred, one does have to realize that the young man did not know how to properly handle a gun. Regardless of this, he did know that guns were dangerous, but thanks to culture and society, guns have been glamourized and fetishized, which downplays the danger. "

" My condulonces to Sophia's Family. No one will ever be able to take away the pain family and friends are going thorugh right now. The only thing we can do is continue to live and help others the way Sophia did. In her memory we should succeed and help others just like she did. Her parents taught her well. As for Raul, you were not taught by your parents to NEVER POINT A GUN at anyone. Your parents never taught you how dangerous gun can be. I blame the parents for not showing this young man. first to not be snopping in strangers bedrooms. Second if you find a gun don't touch it and just leave the premeces. It was accidental, but I do believe he should be punished for his stupidity, but not be charged as an adult. God did not want Raul up there with him. God wanted Sophia to be his angel in heaven. As for Raul's parents you should teach your kids the dangers of guns and everything out there on the streets. Whoever had the gun in the drawer should also be punished for not having it securely put away in a lock cabinet or something. Very irresponsible. "

" I think that the homeowners need to take some of the responsibility. They should have at least locked up the gun. And also if all parents taught there children gun safety then we would not have these kinds of problems "

I think if your going to have a gun in a house you should at least lock it up. So sad for the young girl and her family....... "

Raul could have simply fleed like everyone else, but he stuck around, & even attempted cpr. how can they possibly charge him as an adult. "

" I'm very saddened by the death of this spirited teenager who made such a positive impact on others lives. She was loved by all and a dear friend to many. However, I do find it very hard to believe that after Nogales P.D. is calling this an accidental shooting, this young man will be tried as an adult for second-degree murder. Somehow, this does not all coincide. This young many will have to live with the mistake one moment made for the rest of his life. Question: Had he pulled the trigger while the barrel was in his mouth, would they be calling this a suicide. The young man performed CPR on his friend who was accidentally shot. If this young man is tried as an adult for second-degree murder, there is not justice in this action. I am not saying he does not deserve to be reprememded for his actions but as a parent myself I would hate to be the one to have lost a child or to be the one to possibly lose a child to the judicial system. Think twice before proceeding. "
