Nogales Bashing

By I like living in Nogales
Published Tuesday, August 4, 2009 11:45 AM MDT

Hey folks--Nogales is a very nice place to live. I enjoy purchasing my goods and services in Nogales. I (somehow magically it would seem) manage to get good service and/or information from the clerks or waitstaff etc that I deal with.

Home Depot according to the atricle "Want to Shop Locally in Nogales--Good Luck" was out of a swamp cooler part. Gosh--it is almost August 1st--end of swamp cooler season--only one month to go--yea--maybe that's the reason that they have let their swamp cooler part inventory minimize. The author of this article is bashing all of Nogales. Did she call and request that they special order the part for her???

I was in Home Depot last Sunday. I was greeted at the door by a man named Tom. He personally escourted me to the propper department, helped me find the right "stuff" and then walked me to the do-it-yourself check out. (Just in case you are wondering--no I am not 18 to 22 and was not wearing tight fitting jeans and/or a low cut shirt.)

Yea--I have gone shopping at Home Depot and could not find the item that I was looking for. I then went to Wal Mart and bought it there.

I get good service at Wal Mart, also. The produce guys will even check the back to locate some weird veggie that I want to purchase.

Re the bad wait staff--ok--have you ever called the owners and or managers? How will they know to "fix the problem" without being made aware of the problem? And--yea--if it happens again--take your dollars to some other location. There are many many restaurants in Nogales with great service. We enjoy the service at Bella Mia. Mr. C's--Jose and Lamberto almost strain themselves being nice to us. They now remember our quirky likes and cater to us. Sweet.

Perhaps we should remember that clerks and waitstaff are people too--not your personal slaves. I have seen them treated that way, with much embarassment on my part. Sigh.

Again, I enjoy living in Nogales!

Your example of great customer service is false, wake up you knew tom was a manager of the store. This guy really has some of the worst customer service skills anyway. smells like a staged event. "

No one from these groups has bothered to post a comment in defense of Nogales businesses. Knowing how the public feels about the lack of customer service in Nogales, knowing that people are spending their money elsewhere; wouldn't it make sense for business owners, the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Nogales get together to fix this? Do they not care? This issue is not just about citizens tired of being mistreated in Nogales business (from department/grocery stores to city government employees). This is about citizens taking their business and their money elsewhere. This is an issue that affects the entire town. What are those in charge going to do about it? "

Even worse when you have to give a $250 "donation" to give your loved one a fail well mass when they pass. What are churchess thinking? A "donation" is a percentage that YOU want to give that comes from your heart, not what is now manditory.Thats a shame that even churches want to rip people off. I didnt know that God gave us a price to have him present on our special days. What a shame. "

And then I discovered one (one, uno, need another translation?) of the reasons for the poor service. Most costumers are act like stuck-up, know-it-alls. I am speaking from both the customer and employee side. I've seen how some customers have treated employees with complete disrespect and uncalled for insulting attitudes. I'm sorry, but most of the people that complain about poor service usually get what they deserve. But it works both ways. Some employees do the same, so it's just this unending circle of disrespect from BOTH sides. That is why nothing changes. "

Because my Spanish is broken at best I get the reverse discrimination treatment from some who don't speak English, and in most places that is the majority of them. I also agree that Safeway has excelent service and I enjoy shopping there, unlike Walmart and JC Pennys. Pennys started in my home state of Wyoming and if he shopped in this store he would be appauled. To supply at least one or two people fluent in English would be appreciated. "

On one of my few visits to see family, I was driving through a shopping center when I was chased down by two NPD officers on bicycles, stopped and questioned. When I asked what the reason for being stopped was, one of the officers stated it was because I had out of state tags on my car!! Absolutely no probable cause to stop someone! At the time I was just baffled by his answer, now, after 10 years in the military and 4 years as a police officer in a city of over half a million, I realize how unprofessional those two officers were. Its been about 10 years since that incident and I hope that NPD officers are better trained these days. BTW, I'm not judging the entire NPD because of this single incident. "

I live in Tubac and never take any of my out of town visitors down there, even if they ask to go. I explain to them that unless they want to experience unfriendly people in an environment that has no redeeming qualities, there is no point in going there. I had one guest who insisted on going anyway. On his return he said "You were right." "

" I'm a relative newcomer to Santa Cruz county having moved into Rio Rico 3 years ago. I started out shopping in Nogales because of it's proximity, but after 6 months of outrageously bad customer service, I never go there anymore. The Home Depot where I was going to spend a lot of money for my new home soon lost my business after several frustrating attempts to buy anything. One day I was waiting in the window treatment section for 40 minutes and no one came to help me despite wandering around and looking for someone. I finally called the store on my cell phone and asked for the manager. I explained to them that I was calling from within the store and was attempting to purchase approx $1500 in window treatments. If they wanted my business, they needed to send someone to help me right away or I was leaving. The store manager showed up within 2 minutes and from there I was able to get the help I'd been waiting for. It was explained to me that this particular Home Depot is a "low volume" store so they don't have as much staff on as other Home Depots. Well it seems to me their customer service is the reason they have low volume. With all the new homes being built in this area in 2005-2006, they could've have a lot more business if they knew how to take care of customers. Except for Safeway, my experience of Nogales shopping has been similar elsewhere. I generally find the stores to be dirty with poor customer service. I also noticed when shopping for furniture in one store that there were no prices on the furniture. I asked what the price was of a particular dinette set. I was told $595. I had bought that exact same dinette set in Tucson for $180. One of my mexican friends who used to live in Nogales said there are 2 prices on many things in that town. One price is for the gringos and the other is for the mexicans.... I avoid Nogales like the plague now and live in mortal fear that I might end up in the Holy Cross Hospital ER, another filthy, unfriendly, unprofessional place. Nogales needs to clean up it's act! "

TheTruth wrote on Aug 28, 2009 11:46 AM:

" You know, I can not help but think that is really a racial issue. As 95% of all store clerks in Nogales is of Spanish.Mexican decent, it makes one wonder. Often I have either experienced being a "gringo" or have witnessed it hapening to others as I stand in line. Its not in every business mind you, but it is prevelant. I take all my business to Green Valley now and there is much less of it. But then again, there are many more non Hispanic clerks in Green Valley too. Is this a taletell? I dont know, but as Nogales has shunned new non Hispanic owned businesses away from its borders, this situation may only get worse.
When I asked some of my closest Hispanic friends about this topic, they stated "we'll its just that way". Thats not good. Thats not American "

Most seem to get hired away to other employment, with better pay, which they definitely deserve.

Perhaps you get the smile and the greeting, but I seem to never be able to acheive even eye contact with much of the people in the area. Perhaps I look to much like the gringo I am. "

It's very easy to get eye contact and to earn a smile simply by offering one of your own and by saying 'Hello' (or the all-purpose, 'buen dia').

A smile and a greeting are basic to the Mexican culture. And, let's face it, most of the employees are from that polite and friendly heritage that highly values both.

So, go ahead - try a smile and a greeting next time.

You'll be rewarded with excellent service, guaranteed.

    That's been my experience... "

The employees NEVER make eye contact with customers, they NEVER greet you (it seems they don't know HOW to greet!) and conduct an entire transaction without even looking at you once, or saying a word, including THANK YOU. It is AWFUL and I would urge managers everywhere to take note of this. "

I replyed "pues estos pantalones son "junior" y mira me quedan, so si por favor me puedes habrir una puerta?". she chuckeld and just opened the door. the other person appointed to that station just stood there. i will not lie, thoughts of crying hysterically and making a scene of how this person has hurt my feelings and should get a big huge "F" on customer service crossed my mind. i was done and the item did fit comfortably. as i walk out i don't see anyone so i lay the door sign on the counter. around the coner is person number two, i say "excuse me" she answers "si" , then i ask "como se llama la señora", the reply i get its a chuckel and the persons name with a bad attitude. at check out two people were at the same register one of them was so nice i got a greet and a smile (the other a smile). she even complemented me on the clothing item saying she liked it. i tell her what happend just minute ago in the fitting room, and they both look at eachother in shock, the clirk responds with "that is how she is, we get a lot of complaints about her" then who seems to be the supervisor steps in and says sorry and asks if i would like to place a formal complaint. i did think about it but chose not to. now i know i should of but i didn't. thats my story.

next time i get bad customer service i will place a formal complant, just as i have also on other occasions complemented good customer service.

There are some examples of stellar service on a constant basis: Harriet's Fine Foods, Safeway, Las Vigas, Nonna Vivi (OK...Rio Rico, but still the same area). There are a few places where you can occasionally get good service, but not always. There are, however, some places where "customer service" is non-existent. I REFUSE to ever go back to Ross. The store is filthy, there are never enough workers, no one is able or willing to help, and the lines to check out are always outrageous. I'm sure that there are some good people who work there, but there are not nearly enough of them to take care of all the business that store has. And yes, I have called the 800 numbers and manager's numbers. I got answering machines and no one ever bothered to call me back. Obviously my business and input are not welcome, so I will take my money somewhere else. "

They seem to be unaware that our patronage pays their salaries. I agree that the customer service at Safeway is exceptional. Regardless of whether customers live in Nogales, Arizona or Sonora, each customer is spending their hard-earned money at Nogales, Arizona establishments and should be treated with respect. As a former resident of Nogales, when visiting, I make it a point not to shop at any stores in Nogales. I find the experience infuriating and chose not to spend my money in Nogales. Not that all customer services experiences north of Nogales are stellar, but when one complains to a manager they feel they have been heard and the situation has been ratified. What's the point of complaining to the manager at the Nogales WalMart, Denny's, Cinderella's, JCPenny's, etc., when the managers are as rude as their employees? "

Walmart, however, is another story. Walmarts around the country hire retired people as "Greeters." They are well known for greeting customers as they come in with a friendly smile, a cheery "Hello!" and frequently will even get a shopping cart for you. Apparently the Nogales Walmart hires "Glarers"...all they do is stare at you as you walk in, perhaps trying to see if they recognize your face from mug shots. It generally goes downhill from there. The one exception (and it is a BIG exception) is the Walmart Vision Center. The folks there go out of their way to be helpful and friendly. The rest of the store could take customer service lessons from those people! "

" Me me me!!! I have a bad/good "Wal-Mart experience." Just four hours ago, I went to pick up some one-hour photos from a disposable camera I had dropped off about 24 hours prior. I get to the service desk and not a single soul is behind the counter. My guess? The employee is helping a customer. And so I wait, and wait, and wait. Another customer shows up hoping to retrieve some pictures too. I get impatient and make my way to the electronic department registrars.

There are two cashiers checking out customers and I say: (in Spanish, mind you) Disculpe, necesito asistencia en el departamento de fotographia por favor. The younger of the two cashiers said, "Ahorita voy." She said it with an attitude and tone that suggested she was not at all interested in helping me, or getting someone to help me for that matter. I was so bothered by her response but still managed to give her a hypocritical, "Gracias." UGH!!

To make a short story longer, someone finally arrives, (not from the photo department) searches for my photos, and cannot find them for the life of her. She goes through the three drawers of photos, thrice, and still can't find them. She tells me to come back in 5-10 min when the people who work in that department return from their break. Ok... I begin to leave.

Upon my departure, she starts looking for the photos for the other customer and can't locate them either! The lady who is in charge of photos finally arrives and the other associate just leaves and tells us nothing, no apology, NADA, ZIP. Double UGH!!

"Five hours later" our photos are located in a matter of seconds. The young lady charges me, apologizes for the wait, and says thank you! WOW! This has been one of the few times I have experienced decent customer service at our Nogales Wal-Mart. Will someone please tell me what is so difficult in delivering service with courtesy and a smile? I guess it starts with the up-bringing of a person and then spills over to the mangers and personnel that train these individuals.

There are very few establishments in Nogales that have quality customer service, Safeway is one of them. Their employees are for the most part very courteous and willing to help you.

It's places like Wal-Mart that give other Nogales' businesses a bad image. And that is sad because good customer service does exist. It's not of great abundance, but it's there. "

On the rare occasion that I am treated in a friendly and prompt manner, I make sure to praise the employee and let the supervisor/manager know, so as to encourage this behavior. I still choose to shop elsewhere whenever possible, but still base my choices on customer service, regardless on how far north of the border the business may be. In reference to Mr. Wilgers' comment about service south of the border, that too seems to vary. While I am not necessarily impressed with customer service in Nogales, Sonora either, I must say that on my recent vacation to the southern states of Jalisco and Veracruz, I can confidently say that they could put customer service to shame in the U.S. I guess they don't forget that their paychecks depend on the satisfaction of their clientele. Another time, I was over charged, and even though the rack was right there with the sales price, they argued with me that the price in the computer matters, not the price on the rack or on the item.

Again, I will reiterate my observation. If the client base the business is mainly after is from the north side of the boarder, the service is good. If they are after mainly those from south of the border, it is good in comparison with what you find south of the border, but terrible by the standards north of the border. "
