Hey folks--Nogales is a very nice place to live. I enjoy purchasing my goods and services in Nogales. I (somehow magically it would seem) manage to get good service and/or information from the clerks or waitstaff etc that I deal with.

I was in Home Depot last Sunday. I was greeted at the door by a man named Tom. He personally escourted me to the propper department, helped me find the right "stuff" and then walked me to the do-it-yourself check out. (Just in case you are wondering--no I am not 18 to 22 and was not wearing tight fitting jeans and/or a low cut shirt.)
Yea--I have gone shopping at Home Depot and could not find the item that I was looking for. I then went to Wal Mart and bought it there.
I get good service at Wal Mart, also. The produce guys will even check the back to locate some weird veggie that I want to purchase.
Re the bad wait staff--ok--have you ever called the owners and or managers? How will they know to "fix the problem" without being made aware of the problem? And--yea--if it happens again--take your dollars to some other location. There are many many restaurants in Nogales with great service. We enjoy the service at Bella Mia. Mr. C's--Jose and Lamberto almost strain themselves being nice to us. They now remember our quirky likes and cater to us. Sweet.
Perhaps we should remember that clerks and waitstaff are people too--not your personal slaves. I have seen them treated that way, with much embarassment on my part. Sigh.
Again, I enjoy living in Nogales!

Perhaps you get the smile and the greeting, but I seem to never be able to acheive even eye contact with much of the people in the area. Perhaps I look to much like the gringo I am. "

It's very easy to get eye contact and to earn a smile simply by offering one of your own and by saying 'Hello' (or the all-purpose, 'buen dia').
A smile and a greeting are basic to the Mexican culture. And, let's face it, most of the employees are from that polite and friendly heritage that highly values both.
So, go ahead - try a smile and a greeting next time.
You'll be rewarded with excellent service, guaranteed.
That's been my experience... "

Walmart, however, is another story. Walmarts around the country hire retired people as "Greeters." They are well known for greeting customers as they come in with a friendly smile, a cheery "Hello!" and frequently will even get a shopping cart for you. Apparently the Nogales Walmart hires "Glarers"...all they do is stare at you as you walk in, perhaps trying to see if they recognize your face from mug shots. It generally goes downhill from there. The one exception (and it is a BIG exception) is the Walmart Vision Center. The folks there go out of their way to be helpful and friendly. The rest of the store could take customer service lessons from those people! "

There are two cashiers checking out customers and I say: (in Spanish, mind you) Disculpe, necesito asistencia en el departamento de fotographia por favor. The younger of the two cashiers said, "Ahorita voy." She said it with an attitude and tone that suggested she was not at all interested in helping me, or getting someone to help me for that matter. I was so bothered by her response but still managed to give her a hypocritical, "Gracias." UGH!!
To make a short story longer, someone finally arrives, (not from the photo department) searches for my photos, and cannot find them for the life of her. She goes through the three drawers of photos, thrice, and still can't find them. She tells me to come back in 5-10 min when the people who work in that department return from their break. Ok... I begin to leave.
Upon my departure, she starts looking for the photos for the other customer and can't locate them either! The lady who is in charge of photos finally arrives and the other associate just leaves and tells us nothing, no apology, NADA, ZIP. Double UGH!!
"Five hours later" our photos are located in a matter of seconds. The young lady charges me, apologizes for the wait, and says thank you! WOW! This has been one of the few times I have experienced decent customer service at our Nogales Wal-Mart. Will someone please tell me what is so difficult in delivering service with courtesy and a smile? I guess it starts with the up-bringing of a person and then spills over to the mangers and personnel that train these individuals.
There are very few establishments in Nogales that have quality customer service, Safeway is one of them. Their employees are for the most part very courteous and willing to help you.
It's places like Wal-Mart that give other Nogales' businesses a bad image. And that is sad because good customer service does exist. It's not of great abundance, but it's there. "

Another time, I was over charged, and even though the rack was right there with the sales price, they argued with me that the price in the computer matters, not the price on the rack or on the item.
Again, I will reiterate my observation. If the client base the business is mainly after is from the north side of the boarder, the service is good. If they are after mainly those from south of the border, it is good in comparison with what you find south of the border, but terrible by the standards north of the border. "
