What do you want to see in the NI?

Published Friday, August 28, 2009 10:21 AM MDT

If you haven’t noticed by now, The Associated Press is now available to the Nogales International.

For those of you not familiar with the AP, it is, in basic terms, an international information-sharing pool. And, while this opens up the possibility of a multitude of stories being seen on these pages, rest assured that local coverage written by local people is and always will be the goal of the NI.

We love to write it and we hope you love to read it.

We will, however, limit the amount of AP used on these pages, and prefer to use it only when we feel it will be a benefit to you, the reader.

Having said that, this is your chance to give us input on what you want to see and read about in our print edition, because AP stories will not be seen on our Web site.

It would be naïve of us to ignore that fact that you also have TV, radio, the Internet and other periodicals — namely The Arizona Daily Star and Nuevo Dia — as daily information sources. Because of that, tell us what you don’t get from those media.

Is it coverage of the Little League World Series, that can be seen on Page 2B?

Or maybe it’s boxing, badminton or the great outdoors.

Perhaps you can never get enough coverage of the Arizona Cardinals, as seen at the bottom of this page. Or, is it the Diamondbacks, Wildcats or Scum (oops, I mean) Sun Devils?

Could it be that you feel overloaded with West Coast news, so you want to read about the East Coast’s New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox?

Maybe soccer is your bag, and you find it hard to locate the international information you’re looking for? If so, let us know, because when we do use AP content, we want you to see what you want, not just what the flip of a coin may decide.

This begins a new era for the Nogales International, which has served its community for 84 years — since May of 1925, to be exact.

In hopes of proudly serving you for 84 more years, we feel a heavy burden of doing it right, and the best way to do that is to give you what you want; what you deserve.

So, please, drop us a note via snail-mail.

Send an e-mail.

Throw up a smoke signal.

Or, simply stop us on the street and give us your thoughts.

We understand that if it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be here, so we think it’s only right to ask you exactly you want.

(What do YOU think? E-mail us at editorial@nogalesinternational.com.)

One more thing.. wrote on Sep 9, 2009 3:23 PM:

" When a person is placed in a job above others unfairly and that person is female in a male dominated field, that female has ZERO chance of advancement. And I have said before, this is a wonderful girl and she is the one that is paying for it.

What happens when Olga leaves? When Fontes leaves and the chief leaves? She will be pummled by the others because no one has set up a system that is friendly to females there. Have you talked to the females there? Have you spoken to anyone other than Fontes or Olga? Of course not. So much for your in-depth analysis.

Weak Manuel. Weak. To take a criticism of your taking sides and molding that into I "don't want women to advance" is actually funny considering what I do for a living. Nowhere near the Ivory Tower by the way, still love your paper. "

" You have me confused with someone else. I can assure you that I never defended Mr. Fontes. I know him too well to show anything but dread at his return.

You obviously did not verify as well as you though you did, and the comment about me wanting women not to get ahead is based on what exactly, me pointing out that one woman got ahead by her political connections? Ha ha.

I must have hit a nerve apparently. "

" My opinions are kept on the opinion page and on on-line commentary. In the news stories, the facts are facts. The real dunderheads sooner or later expose themselves. I just write about it.
From your Ivory Tower you can now reflect clearly without fear of political or union retribution. You used to defend Mr. Fontes as long as you thought he he was towing the line.
The reference to the purported family member is false. I have made reference to that both in e-mails and through these postings. I challenge you to prove otherwise.
How do you expect me to post something I know is blatantly untrue?
I'm beginning to thing that what is really going on here is that it bothers you to see other women get ahead. "

Political Reporting wrote on Sep 7, 2009 1:15 PM:

" I truly believe that the Editor, Manuel Coppola, picks and chooses criticism of local politicians by pointing out that he is only following the guidelines outlined for online posts.

He will allow something to be posted saying that the Mayor is an idiot, but will not allow someone to post about Olga Valdez forcing an unqualified family member to employed at the city of Nogales because we are not sure she is a family member.

It is quite obvious that Mr. Coppola likes the Valdez, Lopez and Garino aspects of City politics while despising the Felix, Von Borstel and Fontes side of them (though I totally agree with the Fontes side).

I don't think we should all be aware of that given that this is the only paper and he holds enormous power. With great power is great responsibility Mr. Copolla, and you have lowered yourself to pick and choose of what YOU think is right, and not let us make our owen decisions.

You are not all knowing, none of us are.

    Thank you. "

" How about more stories on the ever expanding community and schools of very nearby Rio Rico?? We can easily flip on the t.v or read a Tucson paper to get world news. How about the stuff in our own back yard?? "

    " Hey John Hays
This is the NOGALES INTERNATIONAL not about Rio Rico. "

Nogales International Reader wrote on Sep 2, 2009 11:54 PM:

" How about TRUE press and honest, clean journalism? Journalism without political smoke curtains; a journalism without the arrangements and compromises, a journalism without the reporters and the editor calling the news makers to ask "If it is OK to print this or to print that"? True, honest, clean journalism is what Nogales readers want to see in Nogales International and its sister nogalesinternational.com "

John Hays wrote on Sep 1, 2009 10:53 AM:

" Beside my Dallas Cowboys, I am most interested in seeing full coverage of Rio Rico Cross Country. "
