BP agent hits bear, rolls vehicle

By JB Miller
Published Tuesday, September 29, 2009 11:28 AM MDT

A Border Patrol agent was treated and released from University Medical Center in Tucson after rolling a government vehicle following a collision with a bear shortly after midnight on Sept. 25.

A bear was struck by a Border Patrol vehicle on Sept. 25. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center in Tucson where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Officer Quentin G. Mehr, a spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said at approximately 12:26 a.m. the Border Patrol agent was traveling along State Route 82 when he hit the bear near milepost 24 between Patagonia and Sonoita.

“The cause of the collision on SR 82 was the vehicle attempted to avoid an animal in the roadway,” said Officer Mehr. “At this time no citations have been issued.”

A Border Patrol spokesperson said the vehicle was a Border Patrol K-9 unit. The spokesperson said the dog was “OK.”

Wildlife Manager Diane Tilton of Arizona Game and Fish Department said the black bear was likely killed upon impact.

Volunteers from Patagonia Fire and Rescue also responded to the accident.
