By 2 p.m., golf pro Rich Smith began registering scores, calculating handicaps and posting the scores, as the players wound up back at the club restaurant.
While volunteers and players chomped on burgers and ribs, eyes were fixed on Rich’s tally board. The tough, hilly course behind them and playing into the wind, and with high-five, back slapping fun ahead, the golfers settled into the award ceremony.
Jean Schweiger and Lee Sullivan hit balls that landed closest to Hole No. 7, while Carlos Ramos and Becky Brennan landed their balls closest to Hole No. 1.
Mario Vidal and Manuel Rubio placed first in Flight A, while Robert Duran and Bob Jontow placed second.
Ray Velasquez and Lalo Villegas placed first in Flight B, while Erik Angel and Martin Diaz placed second.
Lupita Munguia and Yolanda Oropeza placed first in Flight C, while Karen Miller and Pat Barton placed second.
Local, and yet far-flung Kino Springs land owner Alex Mills played his round with usual partner and board president, Nanci Pottinger. After their 18-hole round into the wind, Pottinger addressed the golfers: “This, our 13th annual golf tournament, was a lot of fun,” she said. “Thanks to you who came to play, and thanks to you who gave donations and your time.”
Tournament chairperson, Donna Beedy, and board executive director, Mary Beth Hughes, orchestrated the golf awards program and raffle for the plethora of items donated by merchants, board affiliates and member sponsors. Proceeds buy backpacks for local elementary school students, fund scholarships for secondary education and support local charities. For more information, go to www.sccazrealtor.com.
