The Nogales Lions Club was joined by members of the two Green Valley chapters on Sunday, Dec. 6, to help distribute about $10,000 in shoes, clothing and toys.

“More than 40 Lions and most of their spouses helped us” pick up the children, drive them to the stores and accompany them while they pick the items, Montano explained.
As well, 11 members from the La Canoa Green Valley and Green Valley Lions chapters joined in the effort, Montano said. “They love Nogales.”
They had to wake up at about 4 a.m. to be in Nogales before 6 a.m. The Green Valley clubs donated more than $1,500 for the project.
Dick Pomo and his wife Sharon from the Green Valley chapter were among the visitors. Dick Pomo’s guide dog, “Tanya,” who has been officially designated a Lion, also came for the ride. Joining them was Bob Hamerly, who was a repeat volunteer for the project.
But it was the Pomo’s first time. “It was great. It was worth getting up early for it.”
People should not pet guide dogs when they are in a harness. But at one point, Dick Pomo took the harness off and allowed a few of the children to pet her. It was an added bonus for the already excited kids.
La Conoa Chapter President Aimee Edwards was joined by fellow members Helen Coile, Tom Thompson, Shirl Gibson, Sally and John Beers, Joel and Nancy Keyte.
The Green Valley chapters belong to the same “zone” as the Nogales club. Zone Chairman Manfred Cripe of Nogales, said there is plenty of camaraderie among the members and once the peers in Green Valley learned about the project, they were eager to assist. “They’ve really been a great help.”
The children were from Nogales public schools as well as the local Head Start program, Montano said.
The children had breakfast at McDonald’s on Crawford Street, courtesy of the Pullen family.
The Nogales International, with the help of other area donors, provided the toys.
“We’ll be doing this again next year,” Montano said.
