With all due respect

Published Tuesday, February 9, 2010 9:23 AM MST

After reading Mr. Wilczewski’s column in the Jan. 26, 2010, edition of the Nogales International of how we should pay respect to our National Anthem. I would like to express my opinion.

My father was a World War II veteran and by no means have we ever lost respect for those veterans who fought for our country when the National Anthem has been played at any sport. My father was a fanatic of high school sports and collegian sports and not once did he feel out of place when his granddaughter, who is a NHS Dancer, paid tribute to our National Anthem. He felt proud for the traditional salute that the NHS Dancers and Cheers do with respect, honor and complete devotion to our National Anthem.

" I do agree with Ceci and maybe a little with Rio Rico Knight who wrote on your column. Bill, you know I have great respect for you, but what the poms do I take it as a way the girls pay tribute to our country. I too served, and every time I see Old Glory go by, I don’t care were am at, I will stop and pay my respect, (and asked everyone around me to do the same) those colors display the numerous lives that were sacrifice for our liberty, our freedom, our way of life. Behind those colors stand our proud service man that won’t hesitate to give their life defending America. I feel that the one thing that we need to do, is educate our community on flag etiquette, most do not know it, because we were never told how to respect our colors (flag), our service man, active and veterans. I have seen on many times, specially at sports events, during the presentation of colors, numerous individuals showing disrespect by standing with their back to the colors “because they are socializing, selling food that the concession booths, chewing gum and telling jokes, drinking eating, etc." it is a shame to see that some are the “educators” of those schools, are the elected oficials of our city, even I’ve seen elected County officials do the same, what I feel it’s more ashamed, to see our local law enforcement not saluting the colors, BECAUSE THEY ARE IN UNIFORM. While the national anthem is played or sing, we should stand and as you suggested, have our hand in our hearts, those in uniform, salute, feel each word, rejoice on the fact that we are the greatest country under God because of those Americans blood that colors our flag and let the poms cheers pay their respect the way the feel fit as long is with pride and patriotism. Also, we can contribute to our civil duty by calling out those showing disrespect to the flag and national anthem during the ceremonies. God Bless America! "

    " Mrs. Chavez:
Very well put. Parents and school personnel who actually know these young people, understand the way they are, what's important and how to behave in public situations in which they perform. They honor both their country and the uniform they wear.
Unfortunately, we do have many other youngsters who do not follow the law let alone show any dedication to their nation. These young people, who are in need of direction and role models, are at risk of falling prey to the easy way out. They should be our concern, not those who spend tireless hours after school to both be able to keep their grades up to be eligible, then work extra hard to become State Champions or just a willing participant who is involved in school life above and beyond class.
Congratulations to those students, whether they be athletes, musicians, cheerleaders, drama performers, club members, community volunteers or otherwise from all our schools. What you do for your country is a lot more important that standing still during the national anthem. "
