Negative national press about the border had little impact on attendance of the Santa Cruz Community Foundation’s gala Folklorico! fundraiser on April 17 when a record 330 people turned out.
The foundation’s largest fundraiser for the year was at the historic Holler and Saunders Estate just yards from the Vietnam-era landing mat border fence, which itself was decorated with a colorful ribbon that gave a less menacing appearance to the metal barrier.
That was the handiwork of Patricia De La Torre, who also decorated for the entire event.

The Bank of Tucson and its president Mike Hannley were recognized for their support of the foundation.
“The beautiful setting near the ribbon-festooned border wall was a perfect symbolic representation of the bridging between the two countries that is a major focus of the foundation's service to the community,” said SCCF Executive Director Robert Phillips. “Many attendees remarked that it was the best social and benefit event in recent memory.”
There was a large contingent from the SCCF’s sister foundation in Sonora, FESAC led by Executive Director Alma Cota de Yanez and Antonio Dabdoub, chairman of her board of directors.
The committee that planned the event included volunteers Cecila Kory, Bill Neubauer, Nellie Bracker, Ruby Dean, Jose Valencia, SCCF Board Chair Sue Neilsen and staff persons Kari Davies-Mason, Karla Silva, Annette Brink and Phillips.
A presentation featured the many programs in both Santa Cruz County and Nogales, Sonora aided by SCCF and FESAC.
After learning about the group’s efforts to help non-profit organizations in obtaining funds and providing technical assistance to groups on both sides of the border, attendees were encouraged to take part in the unique cross-border tour program.
