The Fiestas de Mayo, a celebration of binational culture and tradition, is set for May 1 at Fleischer Park in Nogales.
The event, now in its second year, is scheduled to run from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. and will feature Mexican music, food, drinks, and traditional folkloric outfits.
Highlights of the evening will include the selection of the 2010 Fiestas de Mayo Queen (Reina del Mayo) and performances by folkloric dancers, mariachis, school bands and a banda Sinaloense.
The family-oriented event also promises games and jumping castles.
The Fiestas de Mayo is sponsored by the Nogales Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce, the Mexican Consulate, the Nogales Unified School District No. 1, Santa Cruz County and the Nogales International.
“All of us are very proud to be part of this event. We have a strong commitment not to only promote our culture and traditions but to do it in a healthy, family-oriented environment," said Nogales City Councilwoman Esther Melendez Lopez, who helped organize the event in conjunction with the city's Parks and Recreation Department.
