The Nogales AZ Champs U-10 boys Gold and Silver soccer teams finished in first place at the 2012 Tecos Club Dia de Los Ninos Tournament, held at Hidalgo Park in Tucson the weekend of April 21-22.
The Nogales Gold initiated tournament play against Tucson rival Randolph Tormenta. Nogales Gold defeated Tormenta 3-1.
The Nogales Silver followed right after against Tucson Freedom Tecos. Nogales Silver defeated Tecos 5-0.
Right after Silver, Nogales Gold faced tournament host Estudiantes Tecos. Nogales Gold defeated Tecos 2-1. Silver followed with another win against Tucson Freedom 7-0.
Early the next morning, Nogales Silver opened play against Tucson Freedom Mexico. Nogales Silver defeated Mexico 3-0. Nogales Gold followed play against Tucson Desert View and beat them 3-0. That afternoon, both Nogales teams reached the championship game as No. 1 seed.
“Despite having to play during the highest temperatures through out the day and weekend, players gave it their all and played outstanding soccer,” coach Adrian Garcia said.
Nogales Silver played against Tucson Freedom Espana and the game ended with a 1-1 tie. As agreed upon by both coaches prior to the game if a tie occurred, the teams would go directly to penalty kicks. Nogales won 3-2 on penalty kicks.
“This was Silver's first gold medal win, after ending in second place several times,” Garcia said. “Well done and well-deserved.”
Nogales Gold then played against Tucson Freedom Tormenta. After regulation time, Nogales Gold defeated Tormenta 2-0.
“It was also Gold's first gold medal win this year,” Garcia said, “after several second places, so again, well done and deserved.”
