The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross installed 79 smoke alarms in 33 homes in Nogales last Saturday as part of a national initiative called “Sound the Alarm, Save a Life.”

The Red Cross partnered with the Nogales Fire Department and Community Emergency Response Team in the local effort.

According to the Red Cross, home fires are the nation’s most frequent disaster and kill seven people each day – often in homes without working smoke alarms. The organization launched its #endhomefires campaign in 2014 and says that since then, 582 lives have been saved, including eight in Arizona, due to Red Cross free smoke alarms being installed.
