Pedestrian underpass

A pedestrian underpass near the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales is now open around the clock, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The 356-foot-long, $3.3-million underground walkway was completed in early 2016 as a means of keeping pedestrians out of the way of trucks that have cleared ADOT inspections and are accelerating to merge onto State Route 189.

To encourage more pedestrians to use the tunnel, ADOT said on Friday, it has reconfigured fencing near both ends and made the passageway available 24 hours a day rather than during the ADOT facility’s hours of operation.

The Mariposa Port of Entry is currently open for pedestrian and vehicle crossings from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day, though there has been recent talk of making the port a 24-hour facility.
