A dead body found near the Santa Cruz County-Pima County line over the weekend was an undocumented migrant from Mexico, authorities said.
On Saturday morning, a woman called the Pima County Sheriff’s Office to report a dead body 1.1 miles south of Forest Service Road 4138 near Exit 40 on Interstate 19. Because the location turned out to be in Santa Cruz County, local deputies responded.
The victim was identified as Antonio Escobedo-Granciano, 29, from Hidalgo, Michoacan, Mexico. Investigators said it looked as though Escobedo-Granciano “succumbed to exposure to the elements.”
“There was no evidence of foul play,” said Sheriff Antonio Estrada.
The body was taken to the Pima County medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
According to Lt. Raoul Rodriguez of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, Escobedo-Granciano’s is the 18th undocumented immigrant to be confirmed dead in the county this year.
