I read with great interest the letter to the editor of July 20 by Patagonia resident Robert E. Kimball (“Dispute over lieutenant dates back years”).

Let me share a bit of history with regards to staffing levels at the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

In year 2003, we had four lieutenants on staff: at the Metro Task Force, Support Division, Patrol Division and Detention Division. Not only that, but at one time, this office had a captain, Capt. Demetrio Kerson.

We are dangerously understaffed. Lack of adequate staffing constitutes a disservice to county residents in Districts 2 and 3. Not to mention an officer safety issue.

Always good to hear from Mr. Kimball.
