On Saturday, April 27, I attended Officer Jesus Cordova’s memorial at Nogales City Hall. Officer Cordova’s homicide was a terrible loss to his family, friends, coworkers, other law enforcement agencies and our community.
Mr. Roy Bermudez, the Nogales police chief, gave a speech at the ceremony. During the speech, he elaborated about all the assistance the Nogales Police Department received with the investigation of Officer Cordova’s shooting from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, Border Patrol and U.S. Customs.
Nothing was mentioned about the Arizona Department of Public Safety assisting.
It’s times like this that teamwork is required from all law enforcement agencies.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety also responded on April 27, 2018 to assist with the investigation. DPS conducted the investigation in at least five locations.
DPS willingly pulled criminal investigators from Tucson, Phoenix and Cochise County to assist NPD with the investigation. Some DPS officers stayed on scene until 3 a.m. the following morning, getting evidence for the shooting investigation for NPD and the Santa Cruz County Attorney’s Office.
DPS also assisted at Officer Cordova’s funeral and should have received recognition for their support and work, too.
