As the school year ends, so does the tenure of some staff. I am thankful for their time and dedication to the community and students. However, I would like to thank one individual in particular: Nogales High School physical education teacher and coach Vince “Nuch” Villanucci.

For such a large, ominous figure, Nuch has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I’ve ever met. His rules were simple: show up on time and work hard. Seems simple, right? But you may be surprised how many kids struggle to follow them. All he wanted was to teach kids what could really be accomplished by being punctual and applying yourself – two traits that literally anyone is capable of regardless of your background, last name or financial situation, yet so few really ever come to realize.

The impact he had on the school and community is one to remember. But the impact he had on me personally during my time at NHS (2006-2010) as a student-athlete, and professionally as a strength and conditioning coach, is profound. I can only hope to repay him by passing on these life lessons to anyone I am fortunate enough to coach.

So, thank you Nuch. Thank you for holding me accountable, for being a mentor, coach, friend and being true to yourself.

Nogales was lucky to have you as long as we did, you will be missed, but I could not be happier for you. Now go have fun “catching.”
