Outfielder Ricky Maytorena was named player of the year and O.J. Favela was selected the coach of the year in the 5A Conference Southern Region baseball recognitions.
Maytorena, the leadoff batter for the Nogales High School squad, had posted a .477 batting average and .570 on-base though Wednesday, with the Apaches still in the hunt for their third-straight state championship. He was joined on the all-region first team by four NHS teammates.
First baseman/pitcher Alec Acevedo was batting .385 with three home runs and 27 RBIs, while also posting a 6-0 won-loss record and 1.56 ERA. Shortstop Jorge Bojorquez was leading the team with 11 doubles and 17 stolen bases while hitting .419. Mario Duarte, the team’s catcher, was hitting .418 with no errors, while Gerardo Martinez, a pitcher, was 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA, 32 strikeouts and only nine walks in 34 2/3 innings pitched through Wednesday.
Four NHS players were named to the all-region second team.
Pitcher Matt Bachelier earned the distinction for a season in which he has gone 5-1 with a 1.24 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 34 innings. Kenneth Jimenez, a utility player, leads the team with a .576 slugging percentage while also batting .359.
Third baseman Jesus Lopez is batting .347 while tying Acevedo for team highs in home runs (three) and RBIs (27) through Wednesday. Miguel Vega, a first baseman/pitcher, was batting .396 while going 5-1 in a team-high 12 appearances on the mound.
The 5A Southern Region consists of six teams and Nogales went 9-1 in regional play this year. The No. 1-ranked Apaches were 16-2 in the regular season and were 24-4 overall through Wednesday.
