The co-ed soccer team from EdOptions Academy, an alternative online high school in Nogales, is set to compete for the state championship on Saturday in Glendale.
The squad is scheduled to take on Phoenix College Preparatory Academy at 6:30 p.m. at the ASU West Campus for the Division 1 co-ed title in the Canyon Athletic Association (CAA), an organization that provides competitive athletic competition for the state’s non-traditional educational institutions.
This is the fourth consecutive year that an EdOptions team has made it to the CAA playoffs, but the first time they’ve reached the title game, coach Javier Flores said.
After going 7-2 in the regular season, the team beat Tri-City Christian Academy 13-2 to advance to the semifinals. In that game, they got past BASIS-Ahwatukee 2-0 to reach Saturday’s state final.
Team standouts include Yahir Corral, who has eight assists so far in the postseason; Edel Del Rasso, with four goals and four assists; and team captain Adrian Chavez, who has seven goals and an assist. All three have been nominated to play in an all-star game later this month.
Julio Estrada, the team goalkeeper, had 25 saves through the first two playoff games.
Flores noted that some of the girls on the team had never played soccer before this season, but became contributors through practice and dedication.
