Four local high school baseball players were named all-state in the 4A Conference, with two selected to the 4A first team.
Kevin Jimenez, senior shortstop for the state champions from Nogales High School, was named to the all-4A first team after a season in which he batted .457, stole 24 bases, slugged four home runs and drove in 39.
He was joined on the first team by Apaches teammate German Fajardo, a junior pitcher who went 8-1 with a 2.45 ERA, striking out 71 batters in 54 1/3 innings pitched.
Rio Rico High School shortstop Andre Greene was named second-team all-state, having batted .458 with six triples and 25 stolen bases during the 2018 season. Greene was also the Hawks’ top pitcher, striking out 63 batters and posting a 2.16 ERA over 45 1/3 innings pitched.
Markie Lopez of NHS made the second team as a pitcher. He went 7-1 with three saves and a 1.62 ERA in 56 1/3 innings pitched, striking out 71 batters and pitching a complete game in Nogales’ 3-2 win over Catalina Foothills in the state championship game.
The recognitions were given by the Arizona Interscholastic Association following nominations by member coaches.
The 4A Conference is comprised of eight regions, and the NHS and RRHS baseball teams were well represented on their respective all-region teams.
In the Gila Region, Greene was named offensive player of the year. He was joined on the all-region first team by two Hawk teammates: junior outfielder Frank Silva, who batted .373, and senior outfielder Bobby Gonzalez, who hit .381 with a team-high 22 RBIs and 25 stolen bases.
Four RRHS players made the all-Gila Region second team, including sophomore pitcher Saul Sedano (3.62 ERA in seven games), junior catcher Luis Sedano (13 RBIs), senior first baseman Alan Montaño (.364 batting average) and senior second baseman Cristobal Flores (.361, team-high 10 doubles).
In the Kino Region, Nogales players Jimenez, Fajardo and Lopez were all named to the all-region first team, with Jimenez honored as the region player of the year.
Sophomore pitcher Gerardo Martinez (7-0, 1.97 ERA) was picked for the Kino Region second team, as were junior catcher Mario Duarte (.371 batting average) and junior outfielder Ricky Maytorena (.511 on-base percentage as the Apaches’ leadoff batter).
Also named to the Kino Region second team from Nogales High School were junior second baseman Jorge Bojorquez (.393 batting average, team-high 17 doubles), junior third baseman Jesus Lopez (.330 batting average) and junior first baseman Alec Acevedo (four home runs, 32 RBIs). Senior outfielder Marcel Bachelier (team-high five home runs, 39 RBIs) was an honorable mention selection.
