The Rio Rico Hawks took a big early lead in Friday’s high school softball matchup with Walden Grove, but the Red Wolves came back to win 14-11 in a game that featured 19 hits by Rio Rico and 12 by Walden Grove.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, the Hawks came back to tie it in the bottom half on a two-run, bases-loaded single by Jimena Aguilar. They went up 3-2 in their next at-bat when Fernanda Soto led off with a single and came in to score on an error later in the inning.
Walden Grove tied the game in the top of the third, but Rio Rico stormed back in the bottom of the frame with a six-run rally to go ahead 9-3. Michelle Romero had a three-run home run during the outburst and Briana Garcilazo followed with a triple that turned into a run when Garcilazo got caught in a rundown between third and home, and the throw from third hit her and careened away.
The lead did not last long, as the Red Wolves came back with a six-run rally of their own in the top of the fifth to tie the game once more. They added four in the fifth and another run in the sixth to take command of the game.
For the Hawks, Garcilazo had a remarkable day at the plate, reaching base in all five of her at-bats, slugging three triples and a double and scoring four runs.
Jasmin Meras went 4-for-4 with a triple, run and two RBIs, and Taylor Bejarano added three hits.
Rio Rico is set to play its next two games at Douglas and Sahuarita, then host Palo Verde at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 12.
