The Rio Rico Hawks football team almost spoiled Homecoming for the Sahuarita Mustangs last Friday, but came up just short, falling 26-23 in overtime.
The Hawks took a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and were up 10-7 at the half.
Then, after a third-quarter touchdown put the Mustangs ahead, the Hawks came back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the hosts 10-6 to leave the score knotted at 20 at the end of regulation.
Rio Rico converted a field goal in overtime, but Sahaurita did them one better with a touchdown to win the game 26-23.
The Hawks (0-4) have a week off before heading to Vail on Oct. 15 to play the Empire Ravens.
Rio Rico is set to play its first home game of the season at a newly renovated Hawk Stadium on Oct. 29, when they host Catalina Foothills. The game will be played as part of 2021 Homecoming festivities at RRHS.
