The Nogales Apaches softball team dug themselves into a big hole against the Buena Colts on Tuesday. But they didn’t give up, and put together a five-run rally in their final at-bat before losing 21-6.
As Buena piled up 12 runs through the first three innings, the Apaches had a hard time getting their offense started. They got their first hit with one out in the bottom of the third when Ruth Franco singled to left, but she was stranded on base.
In the bottom of the fourth, NHS got on the board when Mea Colgate reached on an infield error, then came in to score on a two-out triple by Odalis Bray.
With the 10-run rule looming in the bottom of the fifth, Nogales mounted a last-ditch rally. After two consecutive hit batters, Izabella Palomares delivered an RBI single. Two more walks forced in another run, and Francia Rodriguez scored two more with a bases-loaded double.
A walk and another hit batter forced home the sixth Apaches’ run before Buena recorded the final out.
Nogales, 1-8 in the regular season after the loss, is set to play four consecutive away games before returning home to play Salpointe at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10.
