A boys tennis doubles team from Nogales High School reached the semifinals of the state Division II tournament before bowing out on Saturday.
The No. 6-seed NHS team of Eric Meyer and Eduardo Yepiz won their first match at the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale on Friday, 6-2, 6-1 over a duo from Lake Havasu High School.
Then in their quarterfinal round match against Flagstaff, Meyer and Yepiz dropped the first set 6-3, came back in the second 6-3, and clinched the match with a tight 7-5 decision in the third set.
That put them into a semifinal matchup with the No. 2-seeded team from Catalina Foothills, which they lost 6-3, 6-1.
On the girls’ side, Diana Garcia of Nogales won her first-round D-II state tournament singles match with an opponent from Prescott on Friday, 6-1, 6-0. However, she was knocked out in the second round by a player from Canyon View, 6-1, 6-0.
In boys singles play, Gabriel Corella of Nogales fell in the first round to a Sahuaro player, 6-4, 6-1. In girls doubles, the Nogales team of Nicolette Fajardo and Carolina Durazo lost in round one to an Ironwood Ridge pair, 6-1, 6-3.
The Apaches’ boys and girls six-member squads were still alive in the D-II team state tournament after winning first-round matches at home. The girls were set to play at Catalina Foothills on Tuesday and the boys were scheduled to take on Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale on Wednesday.
