Hawks rout Amphi, 17-0
Ryan Zuniga and Edgar Olmos threw a combined shutout and the Rio Rico Hawks’ offense exploded for 17 runs on Tuesday in a high school baseball win at Amphitheater.
Zuniga allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out 10 batters over five innings, and Olmos finished up with two innings of two-hit, two-strikeout pitching. Olmos also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs.
The Hawks, 2-8 in the regular season after the win, were set to host Pueblo on Thursday after the NI’s press deadline. They are also scheduled to host Walden Grove at 4 p.m. on Friday.
Nogales girls tennis wins again
The NHS girls tennis team won its third-consecutive shutout and fourth-straight match overall when the Apaches defeated Pueblo 9-0 on Monday in Tucson.
Regular varsity members Diana Garcia, Samantta Garcia, Zarina Gonzalez, Carolina Durazo and Yanula Rodriguez all won their matches, and freshman Daniela Del Grande took advantage of an opportunity to step into the No. 6 position by winning her singles match 6-2, 6-1, and teaming up with Rodriguez for an 8-2 doubles victory.
The Apaches, 7-2 overall and ranked No. 9 in Division II, were set to host Amphitheater on Thursday, after the NI’s press deadline, then take on Palo Verde at home at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9.
Big innings fuel NHS baseball
The Nogales Apaches used two seven-run innings to defeat Buena 14-3 in high school baseball action Tuesday at War Memorial Stadium.
Alec Acevedo earned the win by pitching four innings in which he struck out eight batters, walked one, gave up five hits and one earned run.
The offense was led by Ricky Maytorena, who went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Kenneth Jimenez and Michael Vega each had two hits and three RBIs.
NHS, ranked No. 1 in the state’s 5A Conference with an 8-1 record as of Wednesday, was set to play four away games starting Thursday before hosting Salpointe at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10.
Boys tennis records shutout
Eric Meyer, Eduardo Yepiz, Gabriel Corella, Emilio Heredia, Gabriel Duran and Juan Arvizu all won their singles and doubles matches Monday when the NHS boys tennis team defeated Pueblo 9-0 at home.
The Apaches raised their regular-season record to 7-2 with the victory and were ranked No. 11 in Division II as of Wednesday. Their next home match is at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 against Cholla.
